Braeside: A Versatile Industrial Stencil Typeface

There’s something oddly satisfying about opening a blank brand board and watching a font come to life. I was working on a boutique identity project for a local café, and as I dropped Braeside onto the canvas, it felt like the right move from the start. This square, industrial stencil typeface by Typodermic Fonts has a distinct character that immediately stood out — sharp, clean, and with a no-nonsense attitude.

Braeside is available in two styles: Regular and Outline. The Regular version has a solid presence, while the Outline adds a bit of depth and dimension without being too flashy. It's a great example of how a simple design can be both functional and expressive.

A Font That Speaks Volumes in Design

I tested Braeside across several branding elements, starting with the logo concept. Its geometric structure gave the café a modern, edgy feel that matched their vision perfectly. The stenciled look brought an artisanal, handcrafted vibe, which contrasted nicely with the café’s sleek interior design.

On the brand board, Braeside worked well with a muted color palette. It didn’t overpower the visuals but instead acted as a strong anchor for all other design elements. When I used it on packaging mockups, the font maintained its clarity even at smaller sizes, making it ideal for labels and tags.

For the business cards, I paired Braeside with a soft sans-serif font. The contrast between the bold stencil type and the smooth, clean lines of the sans serif created a balanced visual hierarchy. It helped establish a clear distinction between headings and body text, which is crucial for readability and brand consistency.

Performance Across Different Media

Braeside performed exceptionally well in various media formats. On the website header, it had a commanding presence without feeling overwhelming. The font’s sharp edges translated beautifully into digital formats, ensuring that it looked crisp on screens of all sizes.

In social media graphics, Braeside added a touch of professionalism and creativity. Whether it was used for Instagram posts or Facebook banners, the font maintained its integrity and made the content stand out. For posters and flyers, the outline style gave a sense of movement and energy, which was perfect for promoting events or new menu items.

However, it's worth noting that Braeside might not be the best fit for projects requiring long blocks of body text. Its industrial nature works best in short phrases or headlines. If you're designing a brochure or a lengthy article, you'd need to pair it with a more readable supporting font.

Pairing Braeside with Other Fonts

Font pairing is always an important consideration, and Braeside proved to be quite versatile. When combined with a classic serif font like Georgia or Times New Roman, it created a nice balance between modern and traditional aesthetics. For a more contemporary look, pairing it with a minimalist sans-serif such as Helvetica or Arial worked wonders.

If you're going for a more creative approach, consider matching Braeside with a script or handwritten font. This combination can add a personal, artistic flair that complements the stencil font’s structured form.

One thing to keep in mind is that Braeside doesn't come with many alternates or ligatures. While this may limit some stylistic variations, it also ensures that the font remains consistent and easy to use in most design scenarios.

Testing and Licensing Considerations

Before using Braeside in any final client work, it's essential to test it thoroughly. Try it in different contexts, sizes, and colors to ensure it fits your brand’s tone and message. Since it's a freebie from Typodermic Fonts, it's a great resource for designers looking to experiment without the cost.

Always remember to check the commercial font licensing before using it in client work, especially for brand identity, packaging, templates, merchandise, websites, digital products, or print-on-demand products. Even though Braeside is free, proper licensing ensures that you're using it within the legal boundaries.

Braeside is a fantastic addition to any designer’s toolkit. Its unique blend of industrial strength and clean design makes it suitable for a wide range of branding applications. Whether you're creating a logo, designing packaging, or crafting social media assets, this font brings a fresh perspective that can elevate your design work.
